MITANA

Combining “beauty” (美) with “fixed” (断). Mitana is crafted to celebrate the beauty found in the delicate balance between symmetry and the unique charm of imperfections.

Japanese Tea History

Japan's tea culture, originating in the 9th century with Chinese influences, was formalized in the 12th century by Eisai, evolving into the Japanese tea ceremony focused on mindfulness and simplicity. Tea holds deep cultural significance in Japan, symbolizing hospitality and social interaction. Influenced by Zen philosophy, the practice embraces wabi-sabi aesthetics, celebrating imperfection and the transient nature of life.

Why Japan?

The profound allure of Japanese culture, from traditional arts to modern innovations, motivates the project. Personal visits to Japan have provided insights into its vibrant atmosphere, hospitality, and attention to detail. Japan’s unique design aesthetics, blending tradition and innovation, significantly influence the project's teapot design philosophy.

Design Goals

Ensure the tea set shares a family of form.

Emphasize Japanese culture and kintsugi ideology.

Design with user comfort and ergonomics in mind.

Sencha Tea Preparation

I started off by researching into the preparation of Sencha tea to further my understanding of the culture.

Inspiration Board

I was heavily inspired by the Architecture and Zen gardens in Japan and also the Japanese art of Kintsugi which is repairing broken ceramics using gold

Sketch Ideation

1st Gen Models

Using my sketches I took 3 Tea Sets and made simple 3D Models to understand the form.

2nd Gen Models

Using the previous models, I moved on the 2nd gen models of my one chosen tea set to further my understanding of the form, I also made a task analysis using the models.

Fusion 360 Modelling

White Models - Process

Models are first 3D Printed

Models before Sanding or Priming

Models are Primed using a Primer Spray Paint

Models after a coat of Primer

White Models

After sanding down, I used Spot putty to smoothen out any uneven surfaces

After repeating the process of Priming and Sanding from 220 to 1000 grit sandpaper, The Models are ready to be Painted
